Why We're Here

We opened Needle Drop because we believe vinyl isn't just surviving, it's thriving. And we wanted to be part of that in our community.

Whether you're a lifelong collector or you just bought your first turntable, we're here for all of it. Come in, flip through the bins, ask us anything. This is exactly what we built this place for.

The needle drops. The music plays. Let's go.

There's a moment every vinyl lover knows. You slide a record from its sleeve, set the needle down, and hear that soft crackle before the music begins. It's not just a sound, it's a ritual. And it's one that humans have been performing, in one form or another, for nearly 150 years.

We're opening Needle Drop because we believe that ritual matters. And we think it helps to know where it all began.

The Birth of Recorded Sound (1877–1920s)

It started with Thomas Edison and a tin foil cylinder. In 1877, Edison invented the phonograph, a machine that could record and play back sound for the very first time. It was miraculous, if a little scratchy.

Then came Emile Berliner, who swapped the cylinder for a flat disc in 1887 and called it the gramophone. Suddenly, music could be mass-produced and shared. The disc format won. It always does when it's more practical.

By the early 1900s, shellac records, brittle, heavy 78 RPM discs, were the standard. People gathered around phonographs the same way later generations would gather around televisions. Music, for the first time in history, could come home with you.
